You alreadyknow what to do.

Let’s figure out why you’re not doing it.

“Success is a behavior, not a destination. Strategy without behavior change is just wishful thinking.”

Quick read · Question 1 of 3

Question 1 of 3: Think of the thing you keep not doing. Which is closest?

Fig. 01 — The Gap

Over twelve months, intended progress reaches 96 percent while actual behaviour reaches 31 percent, leaving a gap of 65 percent.

Knowing isn’t
always the problem.

DECISIONTHE GAPMONTH 0MONTH 12

Month 00 · Baseline

You made the plan.

You knew exactly what needed to happen. You were clear. You were ready.

Month 01 · Decision

And you started.

The first two weeks were good. Better than good. You told people about it.

Month 03

Then something happened.

Life got busy. The business took over. The thing that mattered got moved to next week.

Month 07

So you assumed you needed more discipline.

A new planner. A 5 a.m. routine. Another accountability partner who also disappeared.

Month 12 · Present

You’ve been trying to out-discipline a problem you never named.

Every one of those months you were working hard. You just weren’t working on the right problem.

An unnamed Gap doesn’t announce itself.
It just quietly takes a year.
Then another one.

You don’t lose the goal in a dramatic moment. You lose it in the ordinary space between deciding and doing. Twelve months from now, you’ll either have the thing — or the same explanation you gave last year.

That’s The Gap.

Meet The Gap

The Gap is the space between what you know and what you consistently do. Different Gaps require different strategies.

  • Gap 01

    Clarity

You think you know what needs to change. You actually don’t — not specifically enough to act on.

I need to get more organized.

    You might be here if

    • You’ve written the same goal on three different lists and none of them says what to do Monday
    • You can describe the outcome in detail and the first step not at all
    • Every time you sit down to start, you end up researching instead

If someone asked you what the very next action is, could you name it in one sentence?

  • Gap 02

    Environment

Your conditions are quietly working against the behavior. You keep trying to out-willpower your own calendar.

I’ll do it when things slow down.

    You might be here if

    • The work you care most about only gets whatever is left at the end of the day
    • You’ve been waiting for a quieter season for more than a year
    • You do it well on vacation and never at home

Has anything about your actual week changed since you decided?

  • Gap 03

    Skill

Nobody ever taught you how to do the thing. You’ve been treating a training problem like a character flaw.

I just need to be more disciplined.

    You might be here if

    • You avoid one specific part of the task, not the whole task
    • You’ve read about it more times than you’ve done it
    • You could teach someone the easy half and go quiet on the rest

Is it that you won’t do it — or that nobody ever showed you how?

  • Gap 04

    Belief

What you believe about yourself, the work, or what’s possible is in direct conflict with what this change requires.

    That works for other people.

    You might be here if

    • You have a reason ready before you have a plan
    • You describe the goal, then immediately explain why it might not work
    • Succeeding at this would genuinely surprise you

What would have to be true for this to work — and do you believe any of it?

  • Gap 05

    Identity

The behavior doesn’t fit who you understand yourself to be. So you drift back to the version of you that feels familiar.

That’s just not who I am.

    You might be here if

    • You do the thing for two weeks and then start feeling like you’re performing
    • You’ve said “I’m not a ___ person” about the exact skill this requires
    • Getting what you want would change how people describe you

Who would you have to become — and is some part of you resisting that?

  • Gap 06

    Alignment

You’re pursuing something you don’t actually want anymore. And no amount of discipline will fix a goal that isn’t yours.

    I should want this.

    You might be here if

    • You feel relief, not disappointment, when a deadline slips
    • You’re chasing something you chose five years ago and haven’t revisited since
    • You can’t actually remember deciding you wanted this

If nobody would be disappointed, would you still be doing this?

The methodology

The Follow Through Method

Knowing what to do is only the beginning. The Follow Through Method is Coach Key’s behavior-change approach for understanding what interferes with action and building a strategy that makes follow-through more likely.

Know.

What's really happening?

Find the Gap. Separate assumptions from what is actually occurring.

Decide.

What are you going to do?

Match the strategy to the Gap, then choose the next move.

Act.

Follow through.

Implement. Observe. Measure. Adjust. Repeat.

A decision without action
is still just an idea.

What are we working on?

Career

I know I'm ready for something different. I just don't know what my next move should be.

Career transitions. Promotion. Authority. Workplace navigation. Professional identity.

Business

I built something. Now I’m trying to figure out how to actually run it.

Startup. Pricing. Systems. Hiring. Client lifecycle. Operator → CEO.

Leadership

The way I've been leading isn't working at this level.

Delegation. Accountability. Difficult conversations. Teams. Leadership behavior.

Life

Everything looks successful from the outside, but something isn’t working for me anymore.

Boundaries. Priorities. Overwhelm. Alignment. Identity. Transition.

Clinical

I know how to be a clinician. Nobody taught me how to navigate everything that comes after that.

BCBA mentorship. Clinical decision-making. Leadership. Systems. Clinician → owner.

Different problem.
Same first question.

Where’s the Gap?

You know what to do.
So why aren’t you doing it?
